Born from a Vision: Lumens' Journey
Lumens was founded in 2021 by Wandile Vella, driven by a vision to bridge the gap in professional, reliable, and education-based services within the Zimbabwean solar market. Inspired by the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the difficulty of securing employment after an MSc in the UK, Wandile set out to create the dream job he envisioned for himself, but with a broader impact.
The company’s initial focus was on solar system installations, catering to both domestic and national grid-scale projects. Over time, Lumens expanded its offerings to encompass electrical and plumbing contracting services, becoming a one-stop shop for renewable energy and related home improvement needs. This expansion was driven by a pivotal partnership with key players in the SADC region, allowing Lumens to solidify its presence across the country.
The journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Initially, Lumens relied on subcontracting, but challenges in workforce management led to a shift towards directly hiring skilled personnel. Additionally, the company encountered limitations in project timelines due to initial equipment constraints. These early challenges, however, fueled a culture of continuous improvement. Lumens addressed workforce issues by prioritizing skills development and fostering a collaborative environment. The company also invested in acquiring the necessary equipment to ensure timely project delivery.
